Korea 2014 Alumni Event

Hello and welcome to Western Illinois University and the Center for International Studies. Even though the academic year has ended there are still many things going on in the Center for International Studies. As part of our goal for ongoing outreach to our international alumni and friends, the Center for International Studies (CIS) recently hosted an alumni dinner in Seoul, Korea. This was an exciting event and President Thomas and Dr. Carter were able to reconnect with many WIU alums. As part of the event, Dr. Min Young Song, WIU alumna was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for helping to recruit Korean students to WIU.

In addition to attending the alumni event, Dr. Thomas and Dr. Carter also met with past and present students from Gwang-ju University and WIU Study Abroad student Samantha Lack who is studying at Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, Korea. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting Bachelor of Arts in General Studies (BGS) graduate, Jay Hyuk Lee. Dr. Thomas conducted a personal graduation ceremony for Jay, presenting him with his honor society stole and diploma cover.

Several embassy personnel from the Royal Thai Embassy will be visiting campus over Memorial Day. Our visiting teacher group from Myanmar will be completing their month long Summer Institute in Educational Leadership at the end of May. We have learned so much from them and will miss them when they return home. And it won’t be long until our new summer group of students from Gwang-ju University will be on campus for five weeks. There will be 14 new students attending WESL. We are excited to have them on the WIU campus. Dr. Carter will also be traveling to Washington, D.C. to meet with embassy officials in late June. So as you can see, even though it is summer our office will be quite busy! We are looking forward to a productive summer!!
