As you walk around campus you will notice Western is always buzzing with excitement! From the marching band practicing for upcoming football games to students hurrying to classes to Homecoming activities to winter fun to students excelling in their academic pursuits to intramural soccer games and spring flings, Western is the place for you.

Traveling to a new country to live and study is a big step. The Center for International Studies has a friendly, supportive staff to help ease your transition to living and studying in America. Macomb, Illinois, and WIU are located in a safe, friendly community in the heart of the Midwest United States and is just a short train ride away from the big city of Chicago. With year-round housing and free bus service you will be able to easily become familiar with your new surroundings. WIU also offers a week-long orientation program for all new international students and provides a variety of opportunities to experience American culture and practice English.

With a faculty to student ratio of 15:1 you will enjoy a supportive learning community with your teachers that encourages critical thinking and engaged learning. With 65 baccalaureate degrees, 37 master’s degrees, undergraduate certificates and pre-professional programs, and two doctoral programs there are plenty of educational opportunities for all students.

We offer a variety of activities to help you acclimate to the university and to be success academically. Our week-long orientation covers topics such as banking, health issues, safety, cultural concerns, and academic support such as free tutoring. WIU and CIS also provides students with a variety of American and cultural experiences such as the International Bazaar, Cultural Café, International Friendship Club, Conversation Partners, International Neighbors, and field trips throughout the year to other cities and points of interest including Chicago, Springfield, and St. Louis.
