English Language Proficiency

If you are not a native English speaker, you may take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP).

We require the following minimum TOEFL scores:

  • Internet-based (IBT): 73
  • Paper-based (PBT): 533

Official TOEFL scores must be sent to WIU directly from ETS. The institution code for Western Illinois University is 1900.

For IELTS, a minimum score of 6.0 overall bands is required. Official scores need to be sent to Western Illinois University directly from the testing center which administered the test.

For iTEP, a minimum score of 3.7 is required.

Because English proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period, scores more than two years old for either the TOEFL or IELTS will not be accepted.

Please note: some programs require higher or lower minimum scores for admission.
