Spring 2017 New International Student Orientation

Dana

We are very excited that you have chosen Western Illinois University! It is important that you attend orientation as it has been designed especially for you.  This is a great time to meet new and returning students, learn about all of the resources available to you and to have time to adjust to a new culture before beginning classes.

Please read through all of the information below.

If you have any questions or your travel plans have changed, please contact me at dm-vizdal@wiu.edu.

I look forward to meeting you!

- Dana Vizdal

Free Pickup Period:

Free pickup period: Sunday, January 8 - Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Please fill out this form by Friday, January 6, 2017, if you need to be picked up from the Moline airport or the Macomb Amtrak train station.

Orientation Information:

  • While many of the activities during the orientation are voluntary, some are mandatory–-meaning you must attend!
  • All new students MUST ATTEND the orientation activities that appear in bold print and are highlighted. If an activity is not in bold print and highlighted, attendance is optional but highly recommended.
  • The first orientation activity everyone needs to attend is one of the "Check-In" sessions. There are many different Check-ins scheduled. Once you complete your all check-in tasks, you DO NOT need to attend any other Check-ins.
  • Transportation is available to many of the orientation activities, but not all. For each activity in this schedule, there is either a location or pickup location given. If the description says "Go to..." that means there is no transportation and you must go to that location on your own. If it says "Pickup will be at..." it means that vans will pick you up at those locations to take you to the activity.
  • Orientation week is the only time that Center for International Studies staff will be able to help you with airport pickups, shopping and bank trips, and moving. Please make sure to make arrangements for all these activities during the orientation week.

Housing

For info on housing, please visit: http://www.wiu.edu/international_studies/Housing.php.

  • If you are living on campus, you will arrive before the official check-in date.  You will need to sign up for "Winter Break II" option through your STARS account.  This will cover January 1-15, 2017.  Your student account will be charged $155.
  • Another option is to stay at the America's Best Value Inn (approximately $65 per night) until you are able to move into your housing assignment. If you are unsure if you need temporary housing, please ask.
  • If you are in temporary housing and need help moving into your permanent home at any time during the week, please arrange a time with Dana.
