Fall 2012 New International Student Orientation Schedule (Posted May, 2, 2012)

Please note: this schedule is not final!  All activities and evnts are subject to change.  This site will be updated periodically. 

Monday, August 13

9:00 - 11:30 am: CHECK-IN

Go to the Union Ballroom

Please bring your academic and immigration papers, as well as your completed medical forms.

 

12:00 noon:   LUNCH TRIP (Self-pay)

We will take any interested students for lunch near campus.


1:00 - 3:30 pm: CHECK-IN CONTINUES

Go to the Union Ballroom

If you have not checked in yet, bring your academic and immigration papers, and your completed medical forms.

 

2:00 pm: BANK/SHOPPING TRIP

For anyone who wants to shop and open a bank account. Be sure to bring your WIU ID card and passport.

 

6:00 pm: DINNER/DRIVING TOUR OF MACOMB (Self-pay)

We will go to El Rancherito Mexican Restaurant for dinner. After, we will drive around Macomb and the WIU campus to familiarize you with your new home.

 

Tuesday, August 14

All day: EARLY RESIDENCE HALL MOVE-IN

If you have been assigned to live in a university residence hall, please make arrangements with Kevin to move you in today after 10 am.

 

9:00 - 11:30 am: CHECK-IN CONTINUES

Go to 3rd floor Memorial Hall

If you have not checked in yet, bring your academic and immigration papers, and your completed medical forms.

 

10:00 am: MALPASS LIBRARY TOUR

Go to Malpass Library’s Main Floor Atrium Desk

Tour the Malpass Library and learn about all the services and resources available to you there.

 

11:00 am:   LUNCH TRIP (Self-pay)

Pick up at 3 locations: Malpass Library bus stop, Lamoine Village bus stop & America’s Best Value Inn

We’ll take any interested students out to lunch at a local restaurant.

   

2:00 pm: ACADEMIC ADVISING/REGISTRATION INFORMATION MEETING

Go to Morgan Hall 109

REQUIRED FOR ALL GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN FULLY ADMITTED TO THEIR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

 

6:30 pm:   DINNER (Self-pay)

Pick up at 3 locations: Malpass Library bus stop, Lamoine Village bus stop & America’s Best Value Inn

Wednesday, August 15

7:30 - 9:00 am BREAKFAST (Free)

We will provide you with a free breakfast.

 

9:00 am: INFORMATION SESSIONS

Go to Stipes Hall 121

Mandatory session for all students! People from many different university departments will speak to you about the services they proviide. Speakers will give information on:

Student Housing    Public Safety                           Student Health Center

Student Activities                     Recreation Center                Insurance

 

11:30 am: LUNCH TRIP (Self-pay)

Pick up outside of Stipes Hall

We will take any interested students to Asian Buffet for lunch.

 

1:00 - 3:30 pm: CHECK-IN CONTINUES

Go to 3rd floor Memorial Hall

2:00 PM: BANK/SHOPPING TRIP

4:00 pm:   EXCHANGE STUDENT MEETING

Go to Memorial Hall 341

REQUIRED FOR ALL EXCHANGE STUDENTS. MEET WITH STUDY ABROAD ADVISOR TO DISCUSS IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

 

5:45 PM: AMERICAN CULTURE NIGHT (Free)

Come for a free dinner in the Lamoine Room. You’ll be introduced to people from the Macomb community. This activity is a chance to get to know people who live in the area and to learn about US culture.

 

Thursday, August 16

12:00 pm: WESL PLACEMENT TEST

Go to Stipes Hall 121

REQUIRED FOR ALL WHO HAVE NOT MET THEIR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY! PLEASE BRING YOUR PASSPORT! PLEASE NOTE: ALL TEST TAKERS MUST PAY A $100 WESL PLACEMENT TEST FEE (CASH ONLY)

9:00 - 11:30 am: CHECK-IN CONTINUES

Go to 3rd floor Memorial Hall

9:00 am: MATH/ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST

Go to University Advising Center in Memorial Hall basement

REQUIRED FOR ALL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THEIR TOEFL TEST

                

11:00 am: LUNCH TRIP (Self-pay)

Pick up at 3 locations: Malpass Library bus stop, Lamoine Village bus stop & America’s Best Value Inn

Students will buy their own food at Hy-Vee and take it out to Spring Lake park for a picnic and games.

2:00 pm: REGISTRATION MEETING

REQUIRED FOR ALL WHO HAVE PASSED THEIR TOEFL TEST. Here you will work with advisors and actually register for your classes. (Note: exchange students do not need to attend this session.)

 

2:00 pm: BANK/SHOPPING TRIP

Interested students will be taken to Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant for dinner.

 

7:30 pm: THE EXPERIENCE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Go to Sandburg Theater, basement of the University Union

Listen to returning international students talk about their experiences with adjusting to the culture of the U.S. 

 

Friday, August 17

10:00 am:   IMMIGRATION 101

Go to Sandburg Theater, basement of University Union

REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS . Visa Specialist Dawn Casteel will give you all the information you need about your student visa status. Included will be information about drivers’ licenses and Social Security Numbers.

 

11:30 am: AMERICAN CLASSROOM LUNCHEON (Free)

Go to Multicultural Center

We will provide you with lunch and we’ll discuss the culture in the American classroom. Presented by Sociology faculty member Dr. Davison Bideshi.

 

1:00-3:30 pm: CHECK-IN CONTINUES

Go to 3rd floor Memorial Hall

2:00 pm: IFC WELCOME ICE CREAM SOCIAL (Free)

Go to Multicultural Center

The International Friendship Club hosts this gathering to meet the members of their club. Free food, lots of prizes and great fun!

 

3:30-5:30 pm: NEW GRADUATE STUDENT ORIENTATION

Go to Lamoine Room, University Union

An important orientation session for all new graduate students sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies.

 

6:00 pm: DINNER TRIP (self-pay)

Pick up at 3 locations: Malpass Library bus stop, Lamoine Village bus stop & America’s Best Value Inn

Saturday, August 18

Beginning of all-campus orientation

5:00 pm: NEW STUDENT CONVOCATION

Meet outside Student Recreation Center (East side)

WIU President Jack Thomas, faculty, and staff will officially welcome new undergraduate students and their families to Western Illinois University. All incoming freshmen and transfer students should plan to attend this special ceremony which promotes Western’s values and highlights the rich traditions and history of the University.

 

6:15-7:00 pm: PRESIDENT’S FAMILY PICNIC

Immediately after Convocation, outside Western Hall

 

8:00 pm: FIRST NIGHT FUN

Meet in front of Brophy Hall

Come out for a night to remember with free food, prizes, rides, games, and live entertainment. Sponsored by the Division of Student Services, Office of Student Activities, University Housing and Dining Services, Campus Recreation, Student Development and Orientation, Inter-Hall Council, and the Student Government Association.

 

Monday, August 20 – Friday, August 24

1:00—3:30 pm: CONTINUING ORIENTATION ACTIVITIES

Go to 3rd floor Memorial Hall

If you have any additional orientation needs, come to Memorial Hall between 1:00 pm—3:30 pm. Center for International Studies staff will be available to assist you during this time.
