Description of Levels Slides

Slide 1: Title Page

Reads "Software Levels of Interactivity" .

Slide 2: Level 1

Two columns are visible. The first column is labeled Software Characteristics with the following bulleted items: Minimal choices, Predetermined path, Fixed response choice, Set text, Limited sound control, and Fixed graphics. The second column lists software examples of Level 1 software. Animal Tales, Eensy and Friends, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Rodeo, And Switch Basics

Slide 3: Level 1-Opening Page

Opening screen of Circletime Tales Deluxe, which shows a girl in a house that is the clickable choice for the story, "Mary Wore Her Red Dress." Outside of the house a spider hanging from a strand of web, is the clickable choice for "Eensy Weensy Spider." An adult duck and five ducklings in a pond are the clickable choice for "Five Little Ducks." The words "Story Options" are on the screen. Slide 4: Level 1

The picture shows the adult duck and five ducks swimming in the pond. The little ducks are numbered 1 through 5, with ducks 1, 3, and 5 in the front row and ducks 2 and 4 in the back row. At the bottom of the picture, the text "Five little ducks went swimming one day, is shown along with a page with the numeral 1 and a thought balloon to indicate that it is the read option. An open book with a forward arrow on the left page and a backward arrow on the right page is also on the bottom of the picture to show the page turning options, which is highlighted with arrows and the words "Page turning options" added to the slide. Other text on the slide to show the features of the software include "Fixed text and graphics" pointing to the image of the ducks and the story text, and "Read option." Slide 5: Level 2

Again, two columns are visible. The first column is labeled Software Characteristics with the following bulleted items: Multiple choices, Divergent but predictable path, Varied response choice, Set text, Limited sound control, and Fixed graphics. The second column lists software examples of Level 2 software. Arthur's Birthday, Bailey's Book House, Fisher-Price Toddler, Just Me and My Dad, and The Tortoise and the Hare.

Slide 6: Level 2-Opening Page

The opening screen from Stellaluna has the title of the software at the top of the page with Stellaluna, a bat, and upside down from a tree branch. Underneath the bat, are five boxes and ovals that contain software choices which are in clockwise order from left to right "Read to Me," "Bat Quiz, "Let Me Play," "Quit" (which has a hand in a red octagon), and "Options" (which has an open book). Also on the slide are the words "Multiple choices" with arrows leading to the software choices and the disclaimer, "Riverdeep, used with permission."

Slide 7: Level 2 Options

The picture is of the book opened to the "Options" page. On the left page Stellaluna has her wings over the top of a branch. An arrow, that is the go back button, is on the lower left portion of the page. The right page shows an image from the story. Below the picture is the OK button, a page selector with arrows to go backward and forward in the story that also indicates the page number. Two boxes to select demos of other software and credits are located on the page. Arrows show the go back button and page selector. The words, "Riverdeep, used with permission" are next to the image.

Slide 8: Level 2

Page one of Stellaluna is shown. It depicts a scene of the forest with several bats hanging from trees. Two elephants and a giraffe are standing by a watering hole. Something gray is partially submerged in the water. A small oval is at the top of the page and is indicated as a hot spot. The text of the story is, In a warm and sultry forest far, far away there once lived a mother fruit bat and her new baby.

Oh, how Mother Bat loved her soft tiny baby. "I'll name you Stellaluna," she crooned.

Arrows point to six hot spots. Another arrow points to the read option icon, and the word Stellaluna is highlighted white to indicate the read text word-by-word option of the software. The words, "Riverdeep, used with permission" are next to the image.

Slide 9: Level 3

Two columns are visible. The first column is labeled Software Characteristics with the following bulleted items: Multiple choices, Divergent path with moderate user control, Varied response choice, Set text, Limited sound control, and Fixed graphics. The second column lists software examples of Level 3 software: Busytown, Green Eggs and Ham, Let's Explore the Airport, My First Incredible, Amazing Dictionary, and Sammy's Science House.

Slide 10: Level 3-Opening Page

Slide 11: Level 3

An image of page four from Green Eggs and Ham is shown. The picture shows Sam-I-am standing on the kitchen windowsill of a house. A mouse is sitting on a stool in the kitchen. Sam's pal is standing outside the house, scowling. The text of the story reads, "Would you like them in a house? Would you like them with a mouse? I do not like them in a house." Images of a house, a mouse, and pointers indicating here and there replace the words in a rebus option found in the software. The read option is indicated by a green egg. Slide 12: Level 4

Two columns are shown. The left column identifies characteristics of Level 4 software that includes the following: Multiple choices, Divergent path with total user control, Varied response

choice, User-controlled text, Limited sound control, and Somewhat controlled graphics. The second column lists software examples: Disney Magic Artist, I Spy Junior, Kid Pix 4

Photo Kit Junior, and Storybook Weaver.

Slide 13: Level 4-Opening Page

The opening image from Photo Kit Junior. Each corner of the image has a choice for users. Starting in the upper left corner and continuing clockwise, the choices are Player Selection, Exit, Help for Grown-ups, and Pictures, Sounds & Names. In the center of the screen, there is a large white circle with a star that contains a photo from the selected player's collection. Six other circles with related graphics appear on the screen, each an activity choice. Beginning in the upper left and moving clockwise, the activities are Picture Show, Puppet Show, Book Center, Art Center, Games & Puzzles, and Special Effects. Slide 14: Level 4

The opening image from the Photo Kit Junior Book Center is shown. The upper left corner contains the main menu option, while the upper right corner contains the exit. Three circles, one red, one green, and one blue, with a book in each, serve as the binder options for the book. Below these icons are buttons for Undo, Print, and Erase. In the center of the screen is the cover of the book being created. To the right of the cover are the Read Option, Cover Art Options, and Page Turning Option. Slide 15: Level 5

A two-column slide is visible. The left column is labeled software characteristics and contains the following text: "User is given a wide variety of choices and has total control over the following elements: Path, Responses, Text, Sound and sound effects, Graphics, and Content." The right column lists the following software: BuildAbility, HyperStudio 4

IntelliPics Studio 3, Kidspiration 2.0, and MovieWorks Deluxe.

Slide 16: Level 5-Opening Page

The opening screen of IntelliPics Studio is shown. Five buttons with related graphics are visible for the user to select and activity. The choices available are Paint and Design, Sample Activities, Activity Templates, Open My Documents, and IntelliPics Fun, Two Three! Arrows pointing to each button indicate the divergent paths which are totally controlled by users. To the left of the image are the words, "IntelliTools, used with permission."

Slide 17: Level 5

A blank screen from the IntelliPics Studio Paint and Design activity is shown. Along the sides of the screen are toolbars with icons for a variety of activities. Across the top, the toolbars features include, paint, design, slide show, create IntelliMation, open document, save, print, previous page, next page, hide toolbar, home, web link, and page tools. Down the left side are the icons for Down the right side are add sound, play IntelliMation, paint box, and picture library. Slide 18: Level 5

A screen from IntelliPics Studio "A Day at the Beach" activity is shown. On the beach, the girl and her father are building a sand castle. A crab and a bird are also in the scene. Along the top of the page are tools for previous page, next page, create IntelliMation, play IntelliMation, save, and slide show.
