Students are
provided with full-time advisors. There are three full-time advisors assigned to
LEJA students on the
Macomb campus through the COEHS advising center and one full-time advisor at the Quad Cities
campus.
All pre-LEJA
students and LEJA majors are assigned an advisor. Advisors not only assist
students in educational planning regularly but also assist in conducting
advising workshops for freshman and transfer students, assist students in
registering for courses, in
selecting a minor and in planning for career
opportunities. The advisors routinely
send out pertinent information over the email system and the website informing
students of registration and other academic advising events and career opportunities.
Moreover,
students are provided advising information relevant to the program and career
opportunities by faculty and staff. Students are encouraged to take advantage
of faculty office hours to discuss such opportunities. Students are also
advised to contact and register with the WIU Career Services Office early in
their educational career in order to learn about career fairs, job
opportunities, summer job information, occupational counseling, job referral
services, resume building, and other services.
One highlight of the LEJA undergraduate program is the full-time internship that is required of all LEJA majors. One goal of the internship experience is to help students better prepare themselves for employment in their chosen field. Students have an opportunity to more fully understand the principles learned in the classroom and to apply them to an actual criminal justice agency. They have an opportunity for on-the-scene observation of practitioners. It provides the practitioners an opportunity to interact with students. Cooperation between educators and the criminal justice system enhances the professionalization of law enforcement and private security. The LEJA Department has a full-time faculty member assigned to advise students preparing for internship.
The LEJA Department has one full time graduate advisor.
All graduate students are assigned to this
advisor.
The graduate advisor is
responsible for guiding the academic development of each graduate student.
Students work through the graduate advisor to file a degree plan. The degree
plan serves as a guide or road map for the student. Together the student and
advisor will develop an academic plan to fit the student’s interests and needs.
Additionally, the graduate advisor assists students in making application to
the graduate school, applying for graduate assistantships, as well as
registering for coursework.
The graduate
advisor is also available to assist students with development of a thesis topic
and a thesis committee.
