What is interlibrary loan (ILL)?
Interlibrary loan, often referred to as ILL, is a service that allows users to get materials from libraries beyond WIU, both physical items and scanned copies of articles and chapters.
What's the difference between I-Share and ILLiad?
Both allow ordering of non-WIU materials. I-Share is an online catalog and system that supports resource sharing among many libraries in Illinois. Since we’re members, you can request books through the I-Share catalog directly. For articles, book chapters, and books not in I-Share, we use ILLiad, and the orders are processed by ILL staff.
How should I submit my interlibrary loan requests for books?
Always start your search in WestCat, the WIU catalog, then try I-Share. If you find the book you want, click on the green “Request from I-Share” button. If the book isn’t in I-Share, search for it and order in the WorldCat catalog, or go to ILLiad and fill out a request form.
How should I submit my interlibrary loan requests for articles?
All orders for articles go through ILLiad.
Who can use interlibrary loan? Are there charges for interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary loan services are available free to faculty, students, and staff of the Western Illinois University. There are no charges for items returned on time and in good condition.
Where do I pick up my interlibrary loan material?
Articles and chapters will be scanned and made available to you digitally. Books and other physical items will be held at the Access Services Desk in Malpass Library or the main desk at the WIU-Quad Cities Library. You make the choice when you request the item. I-Share books can be sent to a different I-Share library altogether; again, you choose the pick-up location when ordering.
What can I request through interlibrary loan?
You may request books, movies, music, articles, and much more, but some items are difficult to obtain, especially if they are very old or in different formats.
How long will it take to receive my interlibrary loan materials?
I-Share books average 5-7 business days. Books through ILLiad usually take 10-14 days. Thanks to scanning and e-delivery, articles are typically available in 2-3 days.
How will I know if my interlibrary loan items have arrived?
You will receive an email when the items are available.
How long may I keep interlibrary loan materials?
I-Share books start with a 28 day loan period, and may be renewed 3 times. ILLiad books circulate according to the policy of the owning library, which can vary greatly, and renewals are not automatic. Interlibrary loan materials are rarely circulated for an entire semester.
Where should I return interlibrary loan items?
The easiest thing is to return them to the desk where you picked them up, but they can also be placed in one of the book drops or returned at any of the WIU libraries.
How can I renew items or check due dates?
Please refer to ILL renewals.
I am getting emails asking me to return my ILL item. I still need it, what should I do?
Place a new ILL request and return the item. Owning libraries have the right to recall books at any time.
Who do I contact if I have problems with or questions about Interlibrary Loan Services?
The Access Services Desk or ILL staff can help you (309-298-2705). If you need help ordering something, you can also get help at the Reference Desk (309-298-2700).
