On August 12 Jeff Hancks, Head of WIU Libraries Special Collections and Archives, received the first annual report from Steve Hopper, President and CEO of McDonough District Hospital (MDH).
Dr. John Hallwas, Professor Emeritus of English at WIU and local historian served as the Master of Ceremonies for this event.
Dr. Hallwas spoke to the cooperation of two large organizations and their rich histories cooperating together to preserve information about western Illinois. Dr. Hallwas then introduced Dr. Donald Dexter, local physician, who moved to Macomb in 1958 to practice medicine and who has been involved in community service and service to the university ever since.
Dr. Dan Hendricks, Vice President for Advancement and Public Services, spoke to the relationship of medicine, libraries, and history.
As Jeff Hancks states, “Now begins the task of us beginning to organize, preserve and to describe the collection.”
On another note, we thank Kathy Nichols for her work in organizing this event and the dedication she has shown in working with all of us to preserve the history of MDH. Thanks also to Marilyn Shelley for taking pictures of this event.
