Digital Commons Update-Friday Morning

January 27th, 2012

Late Thursday afternoon  members of the Mobile Computing Task Force took a tour of the renovations and the new furniture to be placed in the Digital Commons.  We were delighted to see that the institutional beige walls are being replaced with a nice (do I dare say?) Carolina Blue.  The two shades of blue in this room and the contrasting furniture will make this room very inviting to our library users.

Update on the Digital Commons–Wednesday Afternoon

January 25th, 2012

Physical Plant is putting the finishing touches on the paint trim on our new blue walls.  Hopefully the painting will be completed by the end of the week.  Then UTech will put the finishing touches on network wiring of the display panels, move in the furniture and connect the computers.  Can’t wait to see and hear the reactions of the students.

iPads Used During Nursing Clinicals

January 18th, 2012

During the Fall Semester the library loaned iPads to nursing students as part of an experiment conducted by the School of Nursing and WIU Libraries.  The following are comments I recently received from the Nursing faculty member.
The best part of utilizing the iPads were for clinical applications! Students were role models for other nurses at the health department and opened other people’s eyes as how they can be beneficial to practice. In fact, the administrator of the department is looking for grants for the department to apply for iPads. It was also exciting to see the student use the iPads for educational purposes such as looking up the CDC immunization schedule, to downloading applications to distract children while they wait for their immunization.

The Walls are Up

January 6th, 2012

Take a look for yourself.  The walls are up in the Digital Commons.  Facilities staff have done a great job renovating our Digital Commons.  Hopefully, next week they can install all the new equipment.  Stay tuned.  This should be a wonderful collaborative space for students.

WIU Sequels are Online

January 5th, 2012

Marilyn has been cataloging several local WIU produced VHS and DVD tapes for Archives.  Anyway this morning, she was listening to the Sept. 23, 2002 Founder’s Day Celebration Luncheon which included the Inaugural Address by President Alvin Goldfarb.  It is interesting that President Goldfarb mentioned in his Inaugural Address about looking at old WIU sequels.  Now almost 10 years later the sequels have been digitized and anyone anywhere with Internet access can view these sequels without having to come to WIU Archives to view the Sequels.

Here is the link to access the WIU Sequels
