Nicholas Basbanes
(A book signing featuring noted author Nicholas Basbanes
will be held October 23 from 10-11 a.m. at the
University Union Concourse. Mr. Basbanes will deliver
the keynote address (entitled "Among the Gently Mad")
in the Garden Lounge of Malpass Library at 7:30 p.m.)
Nicholas Basbanes is the author of A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes
and the External Passion for Books which was a finalist for the
National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction and a New York Times
Notable Book of the Year. His second book, Patience and Fortitude:
A Roving Chronicle of Book People, Book Places and Book Culture, was
published by HarperCollins in October 2001. The third book in this cycle,
Life Beyond Life: The Permanence of Books in an Impermanent World
will be published in 2003.
A former reporter and literary columnist, he has contributed articles
and essays to numerous publications, including Smithsonian, The New York
Times, Civilization, The Washington Post, and New England Quarterly.
He also appears as a regular guest on the weekly program, "The Book Guys,"
which is broadcast on 40 public radio stations throughout the country.
