What databases are available to off-campus students?
Virtually all of the library's online subscription databases are available to WIU-affiliated users from any Internet accessible computer. Users are authenticated with either their 14-digit WIU Library Number (21711+ 9-digit WIU ID Number: 21711XXXxxxXXX) or with their WIU ECOM email account username and password. Visit the List of Online Databases for available databases. Click "Info" beside the database title for more database information.
Why are the library databases password protected?
Due to subscription licensing agreements most databases are restricted by commercial vendors to the WIU campus computer network or to WIU-authenticated users. The library's proxy server only requires one-time authentication per session, so users can enter multiple library databases with only a single authentication sequence.
Do off-campus students need a password?
Yes. Students may use their 14-digit Library ID number (i.e. 21711 plus their 9-digit WIU ID number) or WIU ECOM email account username/password to gain access to virtually all of the library's subscription databases.
Where can I find up-to-date links to the library's online databases?
Visit the library's alphabetical list of online databases.
Where can I find a list of the relevant online indexes for a discipline?
Visit the library's Select a Database webpage. You can review lists of library databases organized by discipline and including print and CD-ROM sources only available in the Libraries. The General Databases listing includes multidisciplinary databases, newspaper databases, and other non-specialized online resources.
What services do reference librarians provide?
WIU reference librarians provide a full range of information assistance to distance students including: help with determining which databases are appropriate to their research, help with developing search strategies, referrals to resources in other formats or locations, and much more. Students may ask questions online or dial the reference desk toll-free (1-800-413-6544) during regular service hours.
How do I contact a reference librarian?
Submit an online form, give us a call (dial toll-free within the US: 1-800-413-6544 ), or visit the Reference Desk during hours of service.
Can off-campus students obtain articles and/or books via Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Yes. Please visit ILL Distance Services for more information.
How do I contact a Government/Legal Information librarian?
Submit an online form, give us a call (309-298-2722), or visit the Gov't./Legal Information Desk during hours of service.
How do I contact the ERes manager?
Send an e-mail to PA-Roth@wiu.edu or dial 309-298-2759.
Can my students access full-text articles in order to complete their assignments?
Yes. The library subscribes to approximately 100 full-text databases that are available to any WIU student with an Internet connection and a valid WIU Library ID Number or WIU ECOM email account. Several of the periodical databases are multi-disciplinary in scope (e.g., InfoTrac, Academic Search Elite, LexisNexis Academic) and provide full-text access to magazine, newspaper, and scholarly journal articles.
