GENERAL WORLD MUSIC RESOURCES IN THE MUSIC LIBRARY
--- The reference collection in the Music Library contains several general reference books, which may provide information on the music of various countries and their instruments. The first three titles listed below are major encyclopedias of music. Other general reference sources as well as sources covering particular countries or regions may be found by searching Illinet Online.
The New Grove dictionary of music and musicians. 2nd edition. London: Macmillan; Washington, D.C.: Grove's Dictionary of Music, 2001. Music.REF.ML100.N482001
To locate library sources at WIU and at 40 other Illinois academic libraries, search the online catalog, Illinet Online. You can search by author or title if you know those. If you need to search by subject, there are two ways to do this: 1) keyword searching, and 2) searching the Library of Congress Subject Headings. You can borrow books that we do not have a WIU that you find in Illinet Online from the computer you're searching on.
. KEYWORD SEARCHING
ILLINET Online offers keyword searching which improves your ability to locate world music.
Keyword Search >From the QUICKSEARCH menu
* Select Boolean from the Search By box
* Select desired format from the Quick Limit box
* In Search For box put in keywords separated by Boolean operators, AND, OR or NOT
The library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) to describe library materials by subject. LCSH for world music are structured in a special way; the following guidelines will assist users in finding what they need. These headings can be found in the Big Red Books near the Illinet Online computers.
>From QUICKSEARCH menu
For music of a particular country, i.e. Poland or the United States, search under the subject "Music" subdivided by the country.
WORLDCAT is a database that searches the holdings of many libraries across the United States. It has a direct link from the Music Library Homepage, or you can find it by linking to Journal/Periodical Indexes from the Music Library Homepage. You can search WORLDCAT with keywords and LCSH just as you would Illinet Online. If you find a book you want to borrow, you can borrow it at the computer workstation where you're working.
SHELF ARRANGEMENT OF PRINTED AND RECORDED MUSIC
The Library of Congress classification schedule assigns call numbers to world music items, which places them on the shelf together. RECORDINGS AND PRINTED MUSIC may generally be found within the following classes. Because books about the music of countries are scattered through the ML classification schedule, access through subject headings and keyword searches are much more effective.

Several areas in the Malpass Library also include useful information on world music --- Reference Unit Level 2
The WIU Reference Collection has many materials that can be very helpful in doing research on world music. Although few of the resources are about music, the collection includes many dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, bibliographies, etc. on particular countries, regions and people. For example:
The Audio-visual unit maintains the library's collection of videotapes and other audio-visual materials, including the multivolume JVC Smithsonian Folkways Video Anthology of Music and Dance.
