Program Overview
Chemistry is the basis of the technology for the large-scale production of chemicals and chemical materials that are useful to modern society. Research is an essential component of quality chemistry education, and WIU focuses on research opportunities even at the undergraduate level. Students are able to learn by discovery to reinforce the basic concepts of chemistry and put these concepts into practice.
WIU offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry certified by the American Chemical Society. The department also offers a minor which provides a strong background in all major branches of chemistry. The Teacher Certification option prepares graduates for teaching sixth through twelfth grade chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry also offers an integrated B.S. Chemistry/Biochemistry-M.S. Chemistry degree program as an opportunity for outstanding students to complete both degrees within a 5 year period.
Students planning to major in Chemistry should take four years of high school mathematics and English, and one year each of chemistry and physics.
