Program: Communication Sciences & Disorders

Program Overview

Communication Sciences and Disorders students study speech and language development, anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, pathologies, and basic evaluation and management procedures. Students in WIU's Communication Sciences and Disorders major can work in the campus Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic for clinical practicum experience, or in several off-campus sites.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science degree continue study in either speech-language pathology or audiology to the completion of the master's degree and are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association after passing the national examination and completing the clinical fellowship year. Students wishing to practice speech-language pathology or audiology in the state of Illinois must have a master's degree and licensure. Those wishing to work in schools must have a master's degree and state teacher certification.

Career opportunities are available in clinics, hospitals, schools, and private practice.
WIU's CSD graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
