Update - January 23, 2008
As the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 2007, construction is progressing rapidly on the $6.2 million, 21,000 square foot addition. Check out the Webcam of construction activities as viewed from inside the Recreation Center.

Background Data
The Spencer Student Recreation Center was constructed in 1997, and usage by students, faculty and staff has continued to grow with a peak usage of 2,500 per day and an average of 1,500 per day. With this in mind, the decision has been made to expand the current Recreation Center to allow room for this usage and future growth.
Recommended construction bids were presented to the Western Illinois University Board of Trustees and received their approval on June 1, 2007.
Scope
The renovation will increase the size of the weight room by renovating Court #1 and adding additional space in a "quarter circle" area south of the existing wall on Court #1.
Two arena courts will be added (basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer) and the increased space will allow the track to increase in size to almost double its present size. Additional cardio space will be added on the present south end of the track making it into a Cardio Bridge, as well as the renovation of the current weight room into another fitness area.
Timeline
The building is expected to be completed in August 2008.
