MATC Directing Symposium seeks proposals for papers that investigate past and present approaches to director training and development. We invite papers that critique issues and experiences involved in becoming a director and developing as a theatre artist. 

Questions we hope to address in this symposium include:

We invite papers that critique issues and experiences involved in becoming a director and developing as a theatre artist.

  • What goes into the development and preparation of a director?
  • What skills are being / ought to be taught to beginning directors?
  • What types of training exist and for what ends?
  • How can / do the worlds of academic and professional theatre intersect?
  • How does corollary theatre training (acting, design, etc.) inform director training?
  • How can current trends in training in the other arts (music, dance, art, etc.) influence director training?
  • What can we learn from other fields (communication studies, psychology, business management, literary theory, etc.) about director training?
  • What can we learn from research on the development of noted directors?
  • What models or metaphors for "the director" can / do inform director preparation?
  • What factors influence the continued artistic development of directors?
  • How do directors prepare for particular directing projects?
  • How does teaching directing inform a director's work?
  • What special issues are faced by directors working primarily in academic theatre?
  • What are the special challenges faced by student directors?
  • What is the place of a directing course in the liberal arts, teacher certification, and/or BFA curricula?

Please send 150-250 word abstracts with a cover letter including applicant's name, academic affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Final papers should not exceed 9 pages or 2500 words. Papers will be limited to fifteen minutes maximum.
