(REDEFINING) POWER & COLLABORATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

MATC Directing Symposium seeks proposals for papers, co-papers, interdisciplinary studies, round table discussions and other kinds of presentations (including multi-media, DVD, video) that explore the topic of directorial power and collaboration in the 21st century.   Special consideration will be given to presentations where examples of directing work are given (video, DVD, etc.).

Directorial power and collaboration in the 21st century

Possible areas of exploration in this symposium include:

  • Personal experiences of successful interpersonal relationships with co-collaborators (e.g. movement, vocal, text and acting coaches; dramaturges, designers)
  • Frustrations of the collaborative process and power dynamics with other artists
  • Processes and production structures of contemporary directors
  • Pioneers in power transformation and their productions
  • Feminism/diversity pioneers in directing
  • Exploring the power dynamics of directing
  • Directing experiences with non-text based productions
  • Technology and media experiments
  • Blurring boundaries of traditionally defined areas (acting, directing, design)
  • How the need to balance seasons and other priorities (box office, education, community, finances) has changed the dynamics of directing
  • Mentoring and helping stage managers and assistant directors
  • Multi-dimensional aspects of students and/or communities: how it changes our teaching
  • Exploring alternative power/control structures
  • Cutting edge experiences in directing – where are we going?

Please send 150-250 word abstract for papers/presentations with a cover letter including applicant’s name, academic affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.  Final papers should not exceed 9 pages or 2500 words. Presentations will be limited to fifteen minutes maximum, unless it is a co-presentation or round table discussion, in which case the maximum will be limited to seventy-five minutes.
