Education Symposium 2004

Examining Effective Pedagogy in the University: Teaching the Essentials

Details

  • Dates: March 4 - 7, 2004
  • Location: Chicago, IL
  • Submission Deadline: November 14, 2003
The Theatre Education Symposium would like to invite submissions that actively explore effective and successful theatre pedagogy. All theatre disciplines are urged to share their practice, philosophy and theory.

What are the fundamentals of teaching theatre?  We are interested in both discipline specific & cross-disciplinary presentations.

We are encouraging interested parties to go back to the fundamentals of teaching theatre.  As practitioners we have focused for many years on being the newest and most innovative and, in the process, may have lost the foundations of our training.   For 2004, the MATC Education Symposium is looking for a variety of presentations that focus on how we teach the essentials of theatre.  We are interested in both discipline specific and cross-disciplinary presentations.  Successful proposals could include, but are not limited to: panels, workshops, papers, demonstrations of effective teaching exercises/ assignments, and the sharing or discussion of creative teaching strategies. Teachers of acting, directing, design, playwrighting, dramaturgy and history are encouraged to respond to this call for papers.

How and what do we teach in our individual disciplines?   How do we best teach specific skills (i.e.: how might a directing teacher teach blocking, an acting teacher teach “beats”)?  What are the most essential aspects of our art form that must be taught and sustained?  Why do we structure our classes and degree programs the way we do?  How do we bridge the gap between the classroom/studio and production work?  How can we effectively integrate the vast array of subjects within our own art form?  How can actors inform the teaching of directing? How can playwrights affect the teaching of acting? How do we connect theatre history to performance?  What fundamentals do we need to teach in our subjective art form?

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words long. Individual presentations should not exceed fifteen to twenty minutes maximum. Full workshop sessions or panels should not exceed 75 minutes, including a discussion period. Complete workshop, panel or discussion sessions may be proposed.  Please include a list of all proposed participants as well as their credentials and subject focus. Individuals may submit a proposed presentation, which may then be grouped into a full session by the Symposium Leaders with other like submissions. Applicant name, address, telephone number, email address, and college/university affiliation should be included in the proposal. Deadline for submission is Friday, November 14, 2003.  Send one copy of your proposal to both of the symposium chairs.
