“ANOTHER WAY TO WORK: NON-TRADITIONAL WAYS TO MAKE PLAYS”The title of our Symposium says it all: because this is the 25th anniversary of MATC, it’s a turning point. In keeping with this mood, we want to turn our attention to the future of new play development. To that end, we are seeking to explore as wide a range as possible of alternative ways to create plays. This might include ensemble work, improv work, working with electronic media, puppets, directors, etc.

| We want to have a balance in Kansas City between the scholarly presentation and the interactive workshop. Thus a wide range of proposals is invited: participating workshops, in which practices are demonstrated with the audience (“Here’s how to do this.”); papers/presentations on significant contemporary or historical practitioners (“Here’s what X did; here’s what Y’s doing.”); critical responses to pedagogical techniques, textbooks, etc etc etc.
Proposals are due by November 1, and may take one of two forms:
FOR PAPERS: Please submit a traditional abstract, 100-150 words, including the applicant’s name, academic affiliation, etc.
FOR PANELS: Please submit a description of the panel’s topic and general theme, a list of possible members and specific presentations, etc. (Please note: The Chair of each panel is responsible for arranging the event, contacting the individual panelists, and making whatever arrangements are needed.)
FOR WORKSHOPS: Please submit a description of the activity, how it fits the theme, length of time needed, number of participants possible, etc.
(Please Note: There will be a ten-minute play festival at MATC this year. A separate call for plays will be issued shortly)
