Internship Opportunities - African American Museum

Filed under: Internships — admin @ 11:52 am

The specifics of the internship projects available at the AAMI in the curatorial department are as follows:

  1. The African American Museum of Iowa flooded in June 2008.  The 1008 artifacts that remained dry were taken to a safe site for storage.  The AAMI has been reconstructed and is now re-open.  The artifacts need to be moved back into the building.  One carload of items will be brought back at a time, unpacked, placed on the shelf and the location and status noted in Past Perfect.  This will be done under the supervision of the curator.  This project will give a student excellent experience with the PastPerfect software package.
  2. The permanent exhibit of the AAMI, “Doorways:  A History of Iowa’s African Americans” was destroyed in the June 2008 flood.  A new permanent exhibit is being designed by the Spilt Rock firm of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  A student is needed to assist the curator in supplying the Spilt Rock firm with the information needed to complete the exhibit.  This will include research, choosing artifacts and photos, finding photos and requesting permission for their use.
  3. The AAMI plans an exhibit on African American women in Iowa.  The exhibit will consist of photos.  The AAMI is seeking a student to curate this exhibit.  This will involve choosing photos, making arrangements for living women to be photographed and laying out the exhibit.  This work will be done under the supervision of the curator.  While the preliminary work for this exhibit can be done June - August 2009 the installation of this exhibit will take place in February 2010 with an opening in March 2010.  This date is flexible.

In addition to these projects, there are also internship openings in the education and marketing departments of the AAMI.
