Dr. Chung-Ha Kim was born and raised in Germany. She received piano lessons from Prof. Barbara Szczepanska through the Preparatory Department of the Robert-Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, Germany. After graduating from high school, Dr. Kim enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music in New York for a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. She proceeded to earn a Master of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts-degree at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, majoring in Piano Performance with a cognate in Piano Pedagogy. From 2004-2006, Dr. Kim taught class piano and Preparatory Piano at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. From 2005-2006, she was also the Coordinator of Applied Music in the Preparatory Department. At Western Illinois University’s School of Music, Dr. Kim teaches applied piano, class piano, and piano pedagogy.
Dr. Kim remains active as a performer, appearing regularly in solo as well as chamber music recitals. Recent recitals were at Millikin University and Illinois State University. In 2002, Dr. Kim was invited to perform Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with the University of Giessen’s symphony orchestra in Germany. She also maintains an active research agenda with piano literature, piano pedagogy, and software programs as her primary areas of interest. Recent publications include: “Clementi’s Last Piano Sonata,” published in the April 2004-issue of Clavier, and “Class Management Software: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Blackboard in Group Piano Classes” in the January 2005-issue of Piano Pedagogy Forum. Dr. Kim has another article on Interaction Analysis Software scheduled for publication in the Piano Pedagogy Forum.
Her research on the connection between E. T. A. Hoffmann’s literature and Robert Schumann’s piano music resulted in a lecture-recital presented at the 2005 Illinois State Music Teachers’ Association-conference at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. She served as ISMTA East District Chair from 2005-2006, and is currently the Coordinator of the ISMTA High School and Yamaha Competitions. On the local association level, Dr. Kim served as the Secretary of the Decatur Area Music Teachers’ Association from 2005-2006. Dr. Kim is also a member of the College Music Society.
