Julieta MihaiJulieta Mihai

Ms. Mihai has performed extensively in solo concerts and recitals in Austria, Canada, Germany, Japan, Romania and United States. Her performances have been heard on radio stations such as WUIS (Springfield), Tri States Public Radio (Illinois, Iowa and Missouri) and the Romanian radio station in Bucharest.

Highlights of her 2006-7 season include solo and chamber music recitals in: Ottawa (Canada), Tallahassee, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Potsdam (New York), and Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington and Macomb (Illinois). In 2007, she performed W. A. Mozart Concerto No. 4, K. V. 218 in D Major with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karen L. Deal. In 2006, she collaborated with Chester Alwes and the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana in the performance of the Antonio Vivaldi Concerti Op. 8 No. 1 “Spring” and No. 3 “Autumn” and with Paul Vermel and the Northwest Symphony Orchestra in Camille Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 3 in B minor. In 2004, she performed Jean Sibelius Concerto in D minor Op. 47 with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. In 2002-3, she played Beethoven Concerto with the Berkeley Summer Festival Orchestra in California, conductor Mei-Fang Lin. During summers 2002 and 2003 she attended-on full scholarship-the Toho Gakuen Music Academy in Kureha-Toyama, Japan, where she performed in solo and chamber music recitals. In 2000-1, Ms. Mihai was invited to perform solo works with the Prairie Ensemble and with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. In 1999 and 2000, Ms. Mihai performed as concertmaster of the Prairie Ensemble in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. During summer 2001, Ms. Mihai was a fellow of the Manchester Music Festival in Vermont. In 1996, she was the winner of the Concerto Competition of the Summer Festival Orchestra in Urbana-Champaign and she won the Paul Rolland Violin Award of the University of Illinois. As a soloist, she played annually between 1985 and 1994 with the Ploiesti Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania. In 1992, she participated at the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria. In 1991, she was a semifinalist at the George Enescu International Competition in Bucharest.

As the first violinist of the Julstrom String Quartet since 2004, she has played in many concerts with the ensemble throughout Illinois. In 2007, she went on a tour in Canada as part of the Prairie Oak Piano Quintet. Since summer 2005, she has participated in the Illinois Wesleyan University Chamber Music Festival in Bloomington, directed by Dr. Nina Gordon. In June 2008, she will be teaching during the Summer Camp at Western Illinois University in Macomb. While maintaining an international violin studio at Western Illinois University, she has given guest recitals and master classes in the United States and abroad.

Ms. Mihai began studying the violin at the age of six at the School of Music in Ploiesti, Romania. At the age of eleven she continued her studies at the George Enescu School of Music in Bucharest, and later at the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj and the Academy of Music in Bucharest. From age fourteen to eighteen, she studied with Valeriu Rogacev in Romania. She continued her undergraduate and graduate studies under the guidance of Andras Agoston (Cluj), Octavian Ratiu and Stefan Gheorghiu (Bucharest), Sherban Lupu and Danwen Jiang (Champaign-Urbana). She graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Doctorate in Musical Arts degree in May 2003.

Julieta Mihai, a versatile violinist and chamber musician, is Assistant Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at Western Illinois University in Macomb. Since August 2001, she has served as concertmaster of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Illinois Chamber Orchestra in Springfield. She is also a member of the Julstrom Quartet in Macomb.
