Tammara K. Phillips is Instructor of Flute at Western
Illinois University where she teaches applied flute, flute techniques
and performs in the Camerata Woodwind Quintet. She was previously the
Visiting Assistant Professor of Flute at the Florida State University
where she oversaw a flute studio of approximately 50 flute students.
In addition to her flute studio duties she also taught classes in baroque
flute, woodwind literature, and held the position of Visiting Principal
Flute in the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. She recently performed
in the concert entitled “Finding Common Ground” put together
by the renowned jazz pianist Marcus Roberts as well as in the feature
concert of the Florida State University New Music Festival. She was
also a featured performer in the final concert of the Florida Flute
Association Flute Fair in January 2007.
Dr. Phillips received the Bachelor of Music in flute performance from
Stetson University, the Master of Music in flute performance from James
Madison University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in flute performance
from the Florida State University where she wrote her doctoral treatise
entitled “A Performance Guide to the Works for Flute and Piano
by Philippe Gaubert.” While a doctoral candidate at FSU, Phillips
won the piccolo position in the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra in 2000
and 2001 and held that position until May of 2005; she also performed
as second flute and guest principal flute on several occasions. As a
baroque flute player, Phillips was a member of the FSU baroque ensemble
(2000-2004) and instructor of the baroque flute class (2001-2005).
Dr. Phillips has been a guest artist/clinician for the Lawrence Academy
music camp, the University of Virginia baroque orchestra, the Florida
State University Flute Festival, the flute and oboe studios at Stetson
University, and the CBDNA Southern Division 2002 convention in Atlanta.
In 2004 she was the Chairperson and Coordinator for the Advanced Masterclass
and the Guest Conductor/Clinician for the Honors Flute Choir at the
Florida Flute Association annual Flute Fair. She holds active memberships
in the Florida Flute Association, the National Flute Association, and
the College Music Society.
