Professor of Music, Director of
Choral Activities, conductor of University Singers, Concert Choir. He
received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Music from Stephen F.
Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Dr. Stegall taught high
school choral music in Houston for several years where his choirs received
numerous First Division and Sweepstakes Awards at University Interscholastic
League Concert and Sight-reading Contests. In addition to teaching,
he was an Area Vocal Chairman for the Texas Music Educators Association,
Director of Music at Canterbury United Methodist Church and sang professionally
with the Houston Concert Chorale. Dr. Stegall left Houston in 1986 to
pursue a Doctor in Musical Arts in conducting from The University of
Missouri- Kansas City, Conservatory of Music. While at the Conservatory,
he was the recipient of the Kemper Doctoral Fellowship, the Graduate
Academic Achievement Award, and the Graduate Teaching Award. At Western
Dr. Stegall teaches, choral conducting, graduate seminar in conducting,
choral methods, choral literature and conducts the University Singers
and Concert Choir. He is also advisor to three student organizations;
Choral Union, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the WIU Student Chapter of the
American Choral Directors Association. He has received the Outstanding
Teacher in the College of Fine Arts Award, three Outstanding Student
Organizational Advisor Awards, two Faculty Excellence Awards and the
1996 Outstanding Music Alumnus Award from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Dr. Stegall makes frequent appearances as a guest conductor and All-State
clinician throughout the country. Convention appearances with his University
Singers include the Illinois Music Educators Association State Conference,
Peoria (1992), the Music Educators National Conferences in Minneapolis
(1993), Kansas City (1996), and Peoria (1997). They have recently performed
at the National American Choral Directors Association Convention, San
Diego (1997). Dr. Stegall is member of IMEA, MENC, and ACDA and currently
serving as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Central Division ACDA.
