The primary purpose of the Summer Music Camps at Western Illinois University is to provide the best possible educational opportunity to young people for individual development in the knowledge, practice, and appreciation of the fine art of music in a nurturing musical environment. Any returning camper receives a reduced camp fee!
Cost - $465 Camp Director is Dr. Mike Fansler, Director of Bands, Western Illinois University. Camp will include sectionals, technique classes, and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition, chamber ensembles, and full organization rehearsals. Seating auditions will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 20. Students are asked to prepare two pieces of contrasting style and major scales plus a chromatic scale. Scale requirements in concert pitch are: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db, and a one-octave chromatic scale. All percussionists should be prepared to perform a piece they have prepared in advance of camp as well as the following rudiments on snare drum: single stroke roll, long roll, flam, ruff, paradiddle, Flam Accent #1, Accent #2, and Ratamaque. Camp will culminate in a final performance on Saturday morning, June 26.
Cost - $465 Camp Director is Mr. Brandon Williams, Vocal Music and Music Through Technology Teacher, Ladue Middle School and Ladue Horton Watkins High School, St. Louis, Missouri. All Junior High Concert Camps will include sectionals, technique classes, and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition, chamber ensembles, and full organization rehearsals. The Junior Vocal/Choral Camp is a nurturing experience designed to encourage personal growth and musicianship skills through group activities. Our master teachers help students build a foundation of fundamental skills in music reading, vocal production, stage presence, diction, and basic musicianship through rehearsals, master classes, special enrichment sessions and performance.
Cost - $465 Camp director is Dr. Richard Cangro, Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of the Community Music School at Western Illinois University. Participants will play in a string orchestra that focuses on developing technique, tone, and musicianship through performing quality string literature, all while immersed in an environment filled with musical opportunities in a summer camp setting. All Junior High Camps will include sectionals, technique classes, and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition, chamber ensembles, and full organization rehearsals. Junior string orchestra participants should have at least 2 years of experience on their instrument with the ability to read and perform music from a minimum book 2 level. Placement auditions for seating will take place on Sunday, June 20. Students should be prepared to play a solo demonstrating their technique and bowing skills as well as D, G, A and C major scales. A concert at the end of the week will be the culmination of our exciting rehearsals and sectionals.
