Leathernecks in Training Spring 2013

MACOMB, IL -- Is your resolution for 2013 to get in better shape? Then look no further than Western Illinois University's Leathernecks in Training (LIT) program.

A kick-off for the Spring 2013 LIT program will be held at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 in the University Union Sandburg Theatre. During the last three semesters, 178 employees, students and community members have participated in this free training program. During the Fall 2012 semester, 39 of the 67 participants completed the inaugural Fallen Soldiers 5K Run/Walk as part of the LIT program, and in Spring 2012, 36 of the 111 LIT members participated in the Bridge the Gap races in Quincy.

The Spring 2013 LIT will provide training plans for a 5k and 10k walk/run, a half-marathon (13.1 miles) run and new to this year's program, a 25k (15.5 miles) run. In addition to the training plans, there will be motivational and educational speakers, group training opportunities, weekend training walks/runs, access to area race information, prizes, shirts, medals and more.

On Saturday, May 18 when Team Leatherneck will travel to Quincy to participate in the Bridge the Gap to Health 5k, 10k, or half-marathon walk or run. A new race opportunity will be unveiled at the kick-off meeting Jan. 16. While the Quincy and other events are the goal of the program, Leathernecks in Training members are not required to participate in race events.

"We have had fantastic participation during our 2012 programs and I so look forward to seeing many of our past LIT members and many new members," said Dana Biernbaum, assistant vice president for administrative services and LIT co-coordinator. "Individuals of all fitness levels are welcome to join the program. We will tailor the training so each person can safely participate and reach his or her goals."
