MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Western Illinois University's Board of Trustees and President Jack Thomas recently approved a new program to provide scholarships to qualified students who transfer to Western beginning this fall.

The new Western Commitment Transfer Scholarships will provide new transfer students who have earned an associate's degree and minimum 3.5 grade point average (GPA) with one-time $1,000 scholarships. Students not meeting the GPA requirement will receive $400 awards to buy their books from the University Bookstore.

"We want to reflect our core values in everything we do," Thomas said. "The new $1,000 scholarship for transfer students, such as students who qualify for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, reflects our commitment to academic excellence. The new $400 book award reflects our commitment to educational opportunity. We want to continue to make working with our community college partners throughout the region a priority in order for students to successfully complete their four-year degrees."

According to WIU Director of Admissions Andy Borst, the intent of the new Western Commitment Transfer Scholarships is to grow enrollment of new transfer students at WIU by offering a scholarship or book award at the time of acceptance to the University. All transfer students will still lock in their tuition, fees, room and board beginning in their first semester of enrollment, which reinforces WIU's position as a national leader in cost affordability, he noted.

"Western Illinois University is a great place for transfer students," Borst added. "We consider ourselves to be transfer experts as each year we admit approximately 1,700 new transfer students. These transfer students perform very well at WIU, with a four-year graduation rate around 75 percent and outstanding job and graduate school placements after graduation."

In addition to the Western Commitment Transfer Scholarships, WIU offers many competitive transfer scholarships and grants for academics, alumni affiliation, art, athletics, ROTC, leadership, underrepresented status, music and theatre.
