WIU Jazz Rhythm Section April 6

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Jazz Rhythm Section Festival, featuring professional pianist Michael Weiss, will be held Saturday, April 6 in Browne Hall 130.

Weiss is a renowned jazz recording artist, composer, arranger, bandleader and educator. Along with the WIU jazz program faculty, Weiss will lead the day's clinics, which includes small group clinics from 9:30 – 11:35 a.m.; piano, drum and bass master classes from 1-1:45 p.m.; and a trio master class from 2 - 2:30 p.m. The location of the master classes will be announced at a later time.

At 5:30 p.m., the Michael Weiss Trio will perform in concert in Browne Hall 130. His trio includes bassist Lorin Cohen and percussionist George Fludas.

Jazz critic Ira Gitler said, "The music of Michael Weiss has those qualities which touch the heart, the soul, the mind and the ‘call it whachawanna'."

He started off as a member of a house band at the Star Café in New York City, and has played alongside Junior Cook/ Bill Hardman Quintet, Slide Hampton, Lou Donaldson, David Fathead Newman, Pepper Adams, Frank Wess and Clifford Jordan. His performances have been broadcast on PBS and NPR, and he has held faculty positions at Queens College, Juilliard and the Hartt School of Music. His recordings have won many awards including NPR's Jazz Pick of the Year, and "Stereo Review's" Best Recording of the Month.
