MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas, and other University leaders, recently traveled to Springfield to provide testimony to the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee and to host a Western Illinois University Legislative Reception.

Thomas presented the FY2014 budget request and highlighted the many accomplishments over the past fiscal year, along with the challenges facing higher education. The April 11 testimony coincided with the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development's Macomb Legislative Day in which Macomb and WIU officials met with government leaders.

In collaboration with the WIU Alumni Association, Thomas hosted a legislative reception that evening at the Sangamo Club in Springfield. At the event, Sen. Kirk Dillard, Sen. John Sullivan and Rep. Norine Hammond spoke of their support of Western and higher education.

"We were pleased to host numerous senators, representatives and legislative staff members at the reception. This event also allowed our Springfield area alumni the opportunity to share with our legislative guests their positive experiences at Western," Thomas noted. "We have outstanding relationships with our local and statewide legislators, and we appreciate their support and commitment to Western and to higher education. These events further reinforce our presence and make our voices heard in Springfield. We will continue to work with legislators and constituents to ensure continued support for higher education and Western Illinois University."
