MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University recently extended its 100th offer for its prestigious Centennial Honors Scholarship for Fall 2013. High school students with an ACT score of 32 or higher (top 1 percent of test-takers in the nation), and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the scholarship.

"Of the 100 scholarship offers, 40 high school seniors have accepted for Fall 2013," said Admissions Director Andy Borst. "Students still have until May 15 to accept the scholarship. Compared to last year, we had just 17 students apply who met the scholarship criteria and 10 of those students chose to enroll. We're very happy that many more very-high achieving students are considering WIU."

According to Rick Hardy, director of the Centennial Honors College, the scholarship is just a starting point.

"Our Centennial Honors Scholarship recipients will be at the forefront of the University, representing our core value of academic excellence," Hardy said. "We will help prepare these students to compete on the national stage for awards and honors such as the Rhodes, Truman, Cook, Fulbright, Udall, and Goldwater scholarships, as well as, careers of significance after graduating as WIU Leathernecks."

Hardy noted that within the past two academic years, 10 honors students have been nominated for national awards, including Elizabeth Etta (Macomb, IL ), WIU's first Truman Scholar finalist. The previous year, Jenna Verity (Schaumburg, IL) was WIU's first Rhodes Scholar Finalist. The Centennial Honors College has set a goal to nominate 20 honors students for national awards during the 2013-2014 school year, he added.

The University will host a welcome reception for the new Centennial Honors Scholarship students May 4.
