WIU Fall Classes Begin Aug. 19

MACOMB, IL – Students at Western Illinois University will return to their studies soon as fall classes resume Monday, Aug. 19.

Back-to-School Information
Back-to-school information for Western can be found at wiu.edu/back_to_school/. The website contains a variety of resources, including maps, parking information and restaurant and lodging options in Macomb and Western Illinois. Academic information, including the 2013-14 academic calendar and access to campus email accounts, are also available at the site.

New Student Convocation
WIU President Jack Thomas will host the New Student Convocation, 5:30 – 6:15 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 in Western Hall. Incoming freshmen and transfer students and their families are encouraged to attend the ceremony, which promotes Western's core values of academic excellence, educational opportunity, personal growth and social responsibility.

Thomas will be joined during the ceremony by Board of Trustees Chair Cathy Early, WIU Distinguished Faculty Lecturer James Stegall and Student Government Association President Caleb Markey. Provost and Academic Vice President Ken Hawkinson will serve as the event's master of ceremony.

At the close of the convocation, participants are invited to attend the President's Family Picnic from 6:15–7 p.m. on the Campus Mall, southwest of the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center. In case of rain, the event will be held in the east arena of Western Hall.

From 7:30–8 p.m. students will meet others on their residence hall floors as well as their resident assistants (RA) before walking over to Hanson Field and Q-lot for Rocky After Dark: First Night festivities.

Starting at 8 p.m. students are invited to Rocky After Dark: First Night, which will offer free food, rides, games and live entertainment on Hanson Field and in Q-Lot.

New Student Orientation
There are a wide variety of orientation activities planned to help Western students get acquainted with campus offices, services and recreational opportunities. A complete schedule can be found at wiu.edu/student_services/student_development_office/orientation/.

The balance of the academic and activities calendar for WIU can be found at wiu.edu/webcal. Events listed include a variety of opportunities for families, including Family Day on Saturday, Sept. 28.
