Female Athletic-International Ambassadors Established at WIU
September 26, 2013
MACOMB, IL – For Ashley Luke, a sophomore Leathernecks basketball player from Oak Creek, WI, Western Illinois University's core values of social responsibility and personal growth extend far beyond the classroom and the court. Luke has created a new group at the University to introduce female international students at Western to the world of sports and collegiate camaraderie.
Luke has established the Female Athletic International Ambassadors program at Western, which gives female students from other countries the opportunity to share global perspectives with WIU female student-athletes and to learn more about the campus they share.
The group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 outside of Western Hall to kickoff the first ambassadors' event with a tailgate party, featuring food and WIU athletics memorabilia.
"In an increasingly internationalized world, it is becoming vital to have a greater global understanding. This group achieves that while uniting women to combat the global gender gap," Luke said. "We will work together to share our cultures and learn about others in a fun, judgment-free environment."
Other activities planned include: an international women's basketball camp for one afternoon (October - date TBA); female international students will be recognized at a women's basketball game Nov. 23, including a behind-the-scenes look in the locker room; and guest speakers, a movie screening, pizza party, cooking workshops and sports presentations (dates TBD).
Western is home to 145 female international students.
