MACOMB, IL -- While Apple has announced the release of their latest operating system, OS X Mavericks (10.9), University Technology (uTech) at Western Illinois University would like to remind faculty and staff to keep a few things in mind before downloading and upgrading.

According to uTech Assistant Director, Kevin Morgan, users should first determine if their current software and hardware is compatible before upgrading to any new operating system. WIU faculty and staff wishing to upgrade their office computer should contact their division/college technical support staff or uTech at 298-2704 or support@wiu.edu to request an evaluation.

"Because this software was just released, uTech has not yet completed thorough compatibility testing," Morgan pointed out. "With a new operating system comes a new Safari and calendar. Users will want to know that the system and the new programs work with Zimbra, WesternOnline, Parallels, antivirus and many other specialty or discipline specific tools they are currently using."

In addition, any significant operating system upgrade includes the risk of a failure and data loss if an appropriate backup has not been created, he added.
