MACOMB, IL -- There is one force that can bring together many people despite differing cultures, languages and beliefs: sports.

In another effort to bring together women from all around the world who love, or would like to learn about, sports, the Western Illinois University women's basketball team will host the second Females Athletic International Ambassadors (FAIA) event Monday, Nov. 4. The team, led by Head Coach JD Gravina, teach the fundamentals of basketball to WIU female international students. The event will be held from 4:15-6:15 p.m. in Brophy Hall.

According to Ashley Luke, a sophomore player from Oak Creek, WI and founder of the FAIA, the international students watch the WIU women's basketball team practice, followed by participating in basic instruction, competitive drills and games with the players. The event is open free to all female international students enrolled at WIU.

Luke established the Female Athletic International Ambassadors program at Western earlier this fall to give female students from other countries the opportunity to share global perspectives with WIU female student-athletes and to learn more about the campus they share. Western is home to 145 female international students.

Other activities planned include: female international students will be recognized at a women's basketball game Nov. 23, including a behind-the-scenes look in the locker room; and guest speakers, a movie screening, pizza party, cooking workshops and sports presentations (dates TBD).
