MACOMB, IL -- Going from the tough streets of Central Los Angeles to the New York Times Best Seller List, Chef Jeff Henderson is the epitome of Western Illinois University's 2013-2014 Universitywide theme, "Food and Drink: Mind, Body and Soul."

Henderson, award-winning chef, Food Network personality and author of "Cooking: My Journey from the Streets to the Stove," will bring his skills to WIU's Macomb campus Monday, Feb. 10. Henderson will present a cooking demonstration and a discussion about his work and host a book-signing beginning at 7 p.m. in the University Union Grand Ballroom. The event is open free to the public.

Growing up in central LA and San Diego, by the time Henderson was 19, he was running a $35,000 a week drug operation. At 24, he was arrested and sent to prison, where he spent the next decade. It was while incarcerated that he discovered a passion for cooking and committed himself to turning his life around. Following his release from prison, with no formal education and a criminal background, he struggled for years in the hospitality industry. But because of his determination, he was able to achieve his dreams, eventually becoming the executive chef of Café Bellagio in Las Vegas.

In his newest book, "If You Can See It, You Can Be It," Henderson focuses on drawing inspirational heroes and heroines from all backgrounds on the direct path to their dreams, illustrating how anyone can apply the lessons to get from where they are to where they want to be.

Henderson was the Food Network personality behind "The Chef Jeff Project," which took six at-risk young adults and committed to turning their lives around by putting them to work for his catering company, Posh Urban Cuisine. His latest show, "Family Style with Chef Jeff," demonstrates how good choices in the kitchen can lead to a life changing experience for the whole family. Henderson was also a host on "Beat the Chefs" on the Game Show Network.
