MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Department of Curriculum and Instruction Professor H. Jon Jones (on the left in the photo), who also serves as the director of the Western Illinois University Reading Center, reviews records for the recently completed 2013-14 America Reads Program with WIU graduate assistants (L to R) Hannah Bradshaw (psychology) of Abington, IL, and Zachary Roth (psychology) of Ft. Wayne, IN.

In conjunction with the America Reads Program, personnel at the Reading Center — which operates through Western's College of Education and Human Services — recruit and supervise WIU undergraduate students, who have been providing reading tutoring in Macomb public and private elementary schools for the past 13 years.

According to the WIU Reading Center website, the goal of the America Reads program is for each child in America to be able to read independently by the third grade.

"The University has a team of coordinators and tutors who assist Macomb students from pre-K through sixth grade in improving their reading skills," the site states.
