Dear Campus Community:

Following a recent report to the Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety, I would like to remind our campus community that harassment and acts of prejudice will not be tolerated at Western Illinois University.

When individuals and/or groups become the focus of derogatory comments or acts based on prejudice, it is essential that we reaffirm our University's commitment to the principles of justice, equity and diversity. We expect all members of the University and local community to behave with civility.

It is the policy of Western Illinois University that all faculty, staff, and students work and study in an environment that is free from harassment based on race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, disability, marital status, and veteran status. We are a university that values diversity, and we expect that every individual will be treated with respect.

Individuals who are identified as perpetrating incidents of harassment and/or hate crimes will be met with appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including separation or dismissal from the University. Further, the University will prosecute anyone responsible for such acts to the full extent of the law.

I encourage everyone to take positive steps to assist in creating a campus climate that is respectful, civil and supportive of all students, faculty, staff and guests of the University by modeling appropriate behavior and reporting any harassment they experience, witness, or which is reported to them.

Sincerely,

Andrea Henderson, Director
Equal Opportunity & Access
