Gluck Festival Starts Friday at WIU

MACOMB, IL — The Western Illinois University School of Music will host the Gluck Festival Friday-Sunday, Oct. 17-19 in Memorial Hall at in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

The festival will include performances by the WIU Symphony Orchestra, with Conductor Richard Hughey, along with special guests and soloists.

The event is meant to recognize the birth of the legendary composer Christopher Willibald Gluck and re-evaluate his life and work. The festival will explore his theatrical works, such as operas and ballets.

The festival is split into three sessions throughout the weekend. University of South Carolina Professor Bruce Alan Brown will be the keynote speaker at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, during session two. Each session will be held in Memorial Hall, and include lectures and presentations from musicians, professors and composers from different universities around the country.

The first session, "Singers and Dancers," begins at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17; the second session, "The Cosmopolitan Gluck," at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18; the third session, "Gluck and Drama," at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 and the last session, "German Reception," at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. The two concerts will be Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. including the WIU Symphony Orchestra.
