WIU's Jazz Studio Orchestra to Play Regional Tour

MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois University Jazz Studio Orchestra (JSO) will wind up a four-day regional tour with a 7:30 p.m. performance Thursday, Nov. 13 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

Prior to the Macomb performance, the JSO will perform Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 10-12 at The Washington in Burlington, IA. The Monday and Wednesday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Wednesday performance begins at 8 p.m. The Washington is located at 306 Washington St. in Burlington.

The JSO is the top performing large jazz ensemble at Western Illinois University. The group performs contemporary music from jazz composers such as Jim McNeely, Chuck Owen, Maria Schneider, Mike Crotty and other well-known composers, including WIU jazz faculty composer Professor John Cooper. The JSO performs annually with national jazz artists at the Al Sears Jazz Festival held in Macomb in September, and the WIU Jazz Festival, held in February.

This year's tour will feature special guest Mike Vax at trumpet. Vax is an international artist for the Getzen Musical Instrument Company. He is also a Summit Records recording artist.

Vax performs exclusively on Getzen trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns. He has played lead and solo trumpet with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, the Clark Terry Big Bad Band and the U.S. Navy Show Band.
