MACOMB, IL — With Western Illinois University's fall semester winding down and assignment due dates and final project deadlines looming, WIU students may find themselves studying later into the evenings and away from their residence hall rooms at various locations around campus. As a safety service, Western's Office of Public Safety (OPS) provides an escort system so they don't have to walk alone during the evening hours.

To help get word out about this service, OPS partnered with University Relations (UR) to produce another installment of the WIU Campus Safety Series (see the entire series at http://bit.ly/WIUCampusSafetySeries). Shot and edited by UR Student Content Producer Andrew Hoffman (Ashland, IL), a senior broadcasting major, the latest episode shows how the Student Patrol Escort Service works.

"The Escort Service is available to the entire campus community—students, faculty and-staff—and is just one of several safety resources available to the campus community," OPS Director Scott Harris noted. "The old adage, 'There is strength in numbers,' certainly holds true; it is our hope that students, faculty members and staff members take advantage of these resources. For information on additional resources and safety videos, please visit the Office of Public Safety webpage at www.wiu.edu/ops."

The video features WIU students Emily Manley (Highland, IL), sophomore, broadcasting and marketing double major, as the student who requests a Student Patrol Escort, as well as Shayne Whitehorn (Springfield, IL), sophomore, fire protection services major, who serves as a Student Patrol Escort for the OPS service. OPS Dispatcher Marie Quaresima is also featured in the video, as is OPS Corporal Kerrie Bishop.

According to Harris, Western's Student Patrol provides escorts on campus Sundays-Thursdays from 6 p.m.-2 a.m., a well as on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m.-3 a.m. Student Patrol can be reached by calling OPS at (309) 298-1949. If a Student Patrol member is not available, OPS officers will also provide escorts on campus any time a student, staff member or faculty member requests it.

For more information, contact Harris at (309) 298-1949.
