Ellickson Obituary

MACOMB, IL – Jean Ellickson, the former chair of Western Illinois University's Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work, passed away Nov. 28 in Florida.

Ellickson, an professor emeritus at WIU, began working at Western as an assistant professor of anthropology in 1971. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1974 and professor in 1988 and retired in 2000. She chaired the then Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work from 1991-1995.

After receiving a bachelor's degree in international studies from Ohio State University and a master's in library science from the University of Michigan, Ellickson joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Bangladesh. She then received a master's degree and doctoral degree in anthropology from Michigan State University.

She authored numerous articles and book reviews and had been published in national and international professional journals. She was a three-time Fulbright Scholar and had received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundation and the National Defense Foreign Language Fellowship.
