WIU's Flores Wins State Music Competition

MACOMB, IL — Samantha Flores, a junior music major at Western Illinois University, recently won the state level of the Young Artist Performance Competition sponsored by the Illinois Chapter of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

The competition was held Nov. 9 at Milikin University in Decatur, IL.

Samantha Flores is a native of Tijuna, Mexico and began her musical studies at age 7. She began learning cello soon after and is now studying applied music in cello at WIU. She has toured with orchestras around the United States, Latin America and Europe from a young age. Aside from performing, Flores is dedicated to teaching music and giving clinics and classics in the Macomb and Quad Cities area. Flores performs regularly with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association and the Muscatine Symphony in Iowa.

Flores currently serves as a cellist of the President's International String Quartet at WIU, a position she earned with a full scholarship. She has also served as principal cello of the WIU Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.

Flores will compete at the MTNA East Central Division level in January 2015.
