MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — Beginning next fall, the Western Illinois University College Student Personnel (CSP) Program will offer a new track for advanced-degree seeking professionals interested in pursuing or continuing a career in student affairs. According to College Student Personnel Program Coordinator Tracy Davis, Western's nationally ranked CSP program will, as of the Fall 2015 semester, provide an emphasis of study in Higher Education Leadership. The track will include face-to-face classes based at the WIU-QC Riverfront Campus, as well as online coursework.

Davis, who is also an educational studies professor, said the Higher Education Leadership track is designed specifically for professionals currently working in student affairs (or in a closely related field).

"This track will offer a blended format: students will meet at the WIU-QC Riverfront Campus throughout the semester, with the balance of the coursework to be completed online. This new offering will provide student affairs professionals the flexibility to continue full-time professional employment," he noted. "A member of the CSP faculty will be present at our upcoming Discover Western events to answer any questions prospective students may have."

Upcoming Discover Western open house events at the WIU-QC campus include (see www.wiu.edu/qc/discover/):

  • 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21; and
  • 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 13

Davis said the CSP program, which is offered through WIU's Department of Educational Studies, uses a theory-to-practice model, which means the application of classroom concepts to real-world student affairs work is a critical part of the classroom discussions and course assignments.

"Each class will meet five times during the semester at WIU-QC, and typically, students will take two classes per semester to complete the program in two years. In a small cohort of professionals, students will learn and support each other as students and as student affair professionals," he said.

Western's two-year CSP master of science program meets the standards for the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), which Davis described as "the most comprehensive and rigorous student affairs and higher education graduate preparation program standards within the field."
