MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University's Director of Human Resources Pamela Bowman was recently certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by passing the SPHR exam.

Bowman, who has served as HR director for Western since 2004, took the exam in January.

According to the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) website, the SPHR certification is recognized as a professionally relevant credential for those who have mastered the strategic and policy-making aspects of human resource management in the United States. It is designed for the HR professional who plans, rather than implements, HR policy, focuses on the "big picture," has ultimate accountability in the HR department, has breadth and depth of knowledge in all HR disciplines and understands the business beyond the HR function.

Although certification is not required for her position, Bowman said she took the exam because she recognizes the importance of continuing to learn and grow in her profession.

"While I have worked toward advancing the profession without certification, it is an outwardly identifiable symbol of dedication to it," Bowman said.

"Human resource management (HRM) is a major at Western; we have a Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter; and our student worker is matriculating toward a minor in HRM. I hope to help promote the importance of continuing to learn and grow in our professions," Bowman added. "WIU's human resource office consists of dedicated and knowledgeable professionals; people are our greatest asset."
