MACOMB, IL – The third annual Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service is being honored and celebrated today (Tuesday, April 7) across the country to highlight the impact of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.

In cooperation with Western Illinois University, the Macomb community has been the recipient of work by national service members for many years through the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs' Peace Corps Fellows Program in Community Development and MAPPING the Future of Your Community/AmeriCorps VISTA programs.

"Macomb and McDonough County are fortunate to be served by 12 national service members through a partnership with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs [IIRA] at Western Illinois University," said Macomb Mayor Mike Inman. "These service members, serving in a variety of organizations, will have a lasting, positive impact on our community for many years after their service commitment is completed. For that, we are grateful."

Inman signed a proclamation marking April 7 as National Service Recognition Day in Macomb this year.

According to Karen Mauldin-Curtis, who manages the IIRA's Peace Corps Fellows (PCF) Program, the program currently has seven AmeriCorps state members in community-based organizations and offices in the area, including: Danny Ramirez (Macomb, IL), Office of Community Development; Max Miller (Bucyrus, OH), Western Illinois Regional Council; Jenny Biggs (Gallatin, TN), Housing Authority of McDonough County; Nick Swope (Salem, OR), McDonough County Health Department; Lexie Woodward (Portland, OR) and Ella Lehmann (Cedar Rapids, IA), PCF program; and Mary Fuller (Corning, IA), IIRA.

The local VISTA program, managed by Gisele Hamm, has members serving in five organizations in the area, including: Kylie Davenport, First Presbyterian Church; Jean Davenport, Macomb Food Co-op; and Miriam Brabham, Marie Blome and Joe Marcott, Genesis Garden.

Nationally, more than four million AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and other volunteers have served in over 70,000 locations across the United States.
