MACOMB, IL – Students in the Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting have been awarded Student Television Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America chapter.

The student winners will receive a Crystal Pillar award at the 39th Mid-America Emmy gala in St. Louis, MO, Oct. 3.

Mario Calero, a junior broadcasting major from Elgin, IL, won best animation, graphics and special effects for his work on the student-produced newscasts, NEWS3 "Live at 4" and NEWS3 "Good Morning Macomb."

NEWS3 "Live at 4" is a student-produced newscast that airs live every semester twice a week. "Good Morning Macomb" is an additional newscast that was added in February 2014, airing at 9 a.m. once a week. Calero works as an anchor, executive producer and director of the newscasts.

Andrew Bacon, a senior sports broadcasting major from Chatham, IL, won best editor for his work on promotional videos for WIU Athletics. A football and basketball promo in his submission aired on WGEM-TV and KHQA-TV in Quincy, IL. Another video by Bacon airs before every WIU football game aired by the WIU Department of Broadcasting.

Another video in his submission is played on the WIU video board before football games. Bacon has been the producer and host of "Pigskin Preview" for three years. "Pigskin Preview" is a weekly 30-minute show featuring highlights and interviews with the WIU football head coach and members of the football team.

Students on the NEWS3 staff were awarded a second place (honorable mention) in the newscast category. Shanae Glasgow, a senior broadcasting major from Monmouth, IL, Drew Hoffman, a senior broadcasting major from Ashland, IL, and Calero submitted a newscast from Nov.18, 2014, that centered on the one-year anniversary of the tornado devastation experienced in Washington, IL, in 2013.

Calero worked as an executive producer and technical director on the newscast. Glasgow served as a producer and reporter, and Drew Hoffman was a producer and anchor.

"WIU received as much recognition this year as any school in the mid-America region, including the University of Missouri, University of Arkansas and University of Kansas," said WIU Broadcasting Department Chair Buzz Hoon. "This is more evidence that our students and faculty are able to compete against some of the largest programs in the nation. They continue to raise the bar higher for all of our students and make our alumni proud of their achievements."
