MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University is now the home to McDonough County's first electric vehicle charging station. According to Mandi Green, sustainability and safety coordinator at WIU Facilities Management, the AC level 2 commercial-30 amp station is installed Q-Lot (just east of the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center and near the north entrance to Hanson Field).

"The charging station is compatible with most plug-in hybrid electric and all-electric vehicles," Green said. "This charging station provides a four-six hour charging range, depending on the battery size and the type of vehicle, as the rate of charge varies from vehicle to vehicle."

Green said funding assistance, provided through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Electric Vehicle Rebate Program, enabled WIU Facilities Management staff to install the station.

"At this time, electric vehicle owners on and off campus can use the station for no charge because the cost is nominal," Green said. "To charge the average Chevy Volt, from empty to full, it currently costs approximately $.50. Although, in the future, we do have the ability to install a credit card machine at the station."
