MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Centennial Honors College Special Events Facilitator Patty Battles has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for July.

Battles was hired as a secretary III in January 1987 for the Civil Service Personnel office. She was transferred to the Centennial Honors College in September 1987 and was reallocated by audit to secretary IV in May 1990. In June 2003, she was reclassified as a staff secretary/office manager and was then reclassified to her current position in August 2012.

According to Battles' nominator, she is known for her initiative and gives 100 percent toward helping others.

"There are not enough superlatives to capture what she means to the students, faculty, staff, alumni and administrators at Western," the nominator said. "She is one of the most proactive people I have ever met. She arrives at work early, and all day long she greets scores of people cordially, as well as works over her lunch hour and often beyond normal work hours when necessary. It doesn't go unnoticed that she occasionally takes work home so the week's schedule is not disrupted."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Alisha Looney at AA-Looney@wiu.edu.
