WIU Economics and Decision Sciences Professor Steven Rock Elected to SURS Board of Trustees

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Economics and Decision Sciences Professor Steven M. Rock has been chosen to fill an elected active-member seat on the SURS (State University Retirement System) Board of Trustees. Rock was elected by a majority vote of the remaining five elected trustees. His term runs through July 15, 2018.

Rock has been an economics professor at WIU since 1990 and served six years as chair of Faculty Senate. Prior to coming to Western, he was an associate professor at Northern Illinois University (1986-90) and the Illinois Institute of Technology (1978-86). Rock began his career as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1975-78. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University.

Rock has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, including "Economic Inquiry," "National Tax Journal," "Public Finance Quarterly," "Public Budgeting and Finance," "Transportation Research" and "Public Health Reports."

He is secretary of the Faculty Advisory Council of Illinois Board of Higher Education and national vice president for finance for the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Rock has also been active at the chapter and local level of the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI). He has served on numerous education-related task forces, several involving the Illinois Monetary Assistance Program.

The SURS Board is comprised of 11 members: four elected participating (active) SURS members, two elected annuitant (retired) SURS members, four members appointed by the governor and the chair, appointed by the governor, who also serves as the chair of the Illinois State Board of Higher Education.
