Astronomy Professor to Speak at WIU-QC

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Paul Sipiera, president and CEO of the Planetary Studies Foundation in Galena, IL will deliver the lecture, "Hot Rocks on Blue Ice," at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 on the Western Illinois University Quad Cities campus.

Sipiera will lecture in room 111 of the Riverfront Hall in Moline. The lecture will also be broadcast to the Macomb campus in room 170 of Waggoner Hall.

Sipiera is a professor emeritus of geology and astronomy at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, IL. He also serves as director of the PSF Earth and Space Science Museum in Elizabeth, IL.

In addition to receiving several distinguished awards, Sipiera has research interests in the classification of stone meteorites and their relationship to planetary formation. He has also studied ancient volcanic activity of South Island, New Zealand and has led three scientific expeditions to Antarctica in search of meteorites.

Sipiera has also lead three total solar eclipse observing tours to Mexico, Aruba and Turkey.

While at Western, Sipiera will talk about his expeditions to Antarctica and share stories of his adventures working with meteorites.
